Most people, it seems, have some kind of online presence these days. Either a page on Facebook, or an account at Twitter, everybody seems to be publishing stuff about their lives and activities. A recent study concluded that over sixty percent of all Twitter updates contained nothing more than meaningless daily activities, such as eating a sandwich, or watching TV.
But is there some use to all these avenues of self expression? Can you benefit somehow by having your own website? Believe it or not, there are plenty of legitimate uses for all the avenues of self publication today. In this article, I’ll give you three solid reasons why everybody, including you, should have their own website.
The primary reason is that it is the easiest way to stay in communication with family and friends. While your Aunt and Uncle may not be interested in what you had for lunch, posting updates and pictures about your work, life and family can make it much easier for everybody to stay up to date. It’s even a great way to communicate back and forth, as blog comments can be an efficient means of staying in touch.
The second reason is that if you are in any kind of career, or are looking for one, having an online presence is absolutely essential. Imagine a job interview and the two finalists are you and some other guy. You have a professionally designed web site, with a domain name the same as your real name, so you come up fairly high in Google’s rankings. The other guy has a Facebook page proudly displaying him doing a beer bong during spring break. Who do you think will get hired?
Another compelling reason is that it can give you a way to express yourself in a way that just didn’t exist a few years ago. If you’ve got any controversial views or ideas that you really want to express, but aren’t sure how people will respond, anonymous blogging is a great solution. There are plenty of anonymous bloggers out there with extremely controversial views that have huge followings and generate involved and heated discussions on their blogs. You may think that you are the only one that thinks the way you do, but when you start blogging, you’ll find there are plenty of like minded people out there.
Naturally, you can likely think of plenty other reasons to get online. Once you establish your online presence, you’ll be able to stay in touch with friends and family, promote a professional image of yourself, or anonymously share unique viewpoints with thousands of others around the world. You’re only limited by your imagination.
